How we’re recruiting individuals from diverse backgrounds

| | Heidi Thompson | 8 February 2024

At Duncan & Toplis, we recruit and develop people from a range of diverse backgrounds through our extensive career pathway options, including (but not limited to) our coveted apprenticeship scheme.

We are proud to be linked with a range of education establishments across the East Midlands and beyond so that we can tap into talent from across a wide array of socio-economic backgrounds.

We’re committed to developing our team

We’re always committed to growing and developing our team members, both professionally and personally. This not only enables us to provide the best level of service to our clients, but also allows our people to have fulfilling roles, be more engaged, and remain with the firm for a long period of their career.

Growing our own talent has also enabled us to overcome wider skills shortages in the sector, enabling us to stay ahead of the competition.

We’re extremely proud to be part of Access Accountancy, an organisation with the aim to ensure that each and every individual has an equal chance of accessing, and progressing, within the accountancy profession based on merit alone - not their background.

We’re also a partner of Rise, the ICAEW-backed initiative with the aim of reaching 50,000 young people in the next year, boosting social mobility by helping these individuals to develop the necessary skills that businesses require.

Our entry-level routes into accountancy

We offer a range of different entry-level routes into the industry through our apprenticeships and training contracts. Whether you’re a school leaver, graduate, or looking for a career change, we have a multitude of options to choose from.

While we do review and assess academic abilities, we prioritise hiring people with the right attitudes and have values that align with ours. We look at the individual themselves and their achievements and then review the right career pathway that will support them to achieve their aspirations.

Under an apprenticeship and/or training contract, the individual will learn the role and gain a recognised qualification, whilst earning at the same time.

For school leavers and people new to the industry, we offer apprenticeships and training contracts ranging from 18 months to three years. We offer an AAT apprenticeship at levels 3 and 4 for those wanting to start a career in business services, CFAB level 4 apprenticeship for school leavers which leads directly onto the ACA level 7 apprenticeship, and an ATT apprenticeship or VAT diploma for the tax area.

At Duncan & Toplis, our people have all the benefits and opportunities that come with working for a large independent practice with the community feel of a smaller practice, where individual commitment and contributions are celebrated.

Are you looking for your next career opportunity? Whatever your background, we’d love to hear from you. Take a look at our early career vacancies here.
